Preconference 1 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Just Like Storytime, Only Louder & Smellier: Why Videogame Tournaments Belong In The Library Eli Neiburger - Associate Director of IT and Product Development, Ann Arbor District Library, Ann Arbor, MI Cost - $25.00 Videogames are increasingly in demand in every community, but to many library staff, it's a whole new world that's more than a little scary. Eli Neiburger is a lifelong gamer and has been running successful tournaments at Ann Arbor District Library since 2004, attracting new patrons to the library and changing their ideas about what a library is for. Come find out why videogame events make sense for libraries, what games make sense for a library to play, and how gaming events can be funded, staffed, marketed, set up, and produced to maximize the impact and success of the events. We'll even have a short tournanent for attendees to show how easy and fun videogame events can be.
Preconference 2 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Conflict Resolution: The Art of Effective Communication and Resolving Conflict Ed Klee - SOLINET Trainer and Consultant, Versailles, KY Cost - $25.00 If practice really did make things perfect, we would be master communicators and effective mediators for resolving conflict. However, individuals in the work place are spending less and less time effectively communicating and misunderstanding is becoming the end product. Ineffective communication and conflict become the destructive power. Miscommunication and conflict quickly lead to a dysfunctional organization. Coworkers slowly but surely lose their sense of cohesiveness. Distrust, disrespect, and dissatisfaction on the job become contagions. The organization's culture turns unfriendly and unforgiving. Good people leave. Those who remain are unhappy. This workshop helps participants look at conflict on a personal, interpersonal, and organizational level. It focuses on learning techniques for resolving one-on-one conflict, resolving conflict among co-workers, and developing strategies for effectively addressing conflict within the organization. The session provides personal assessments for identifying instinctive conflict modes, strategies for coping with other's negative behaviors, and techniques for effectively addressing and resolving conflict.
Preconference 3 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Library Services For A New Age: Transforming Libraries Into Centers For Boomer Learning And Community Participation Diantha Dow Schull - Director of Libraries for the Future's Lifelong Access Libraries Initiative Cost - $25.00 Diantha Dow Schull, Director of Libraries for the Future's Lifelong Access Libraries Initiative, and former President of Libraries for the Future, will lead the program. Two current Lifelong Access Libraries Fellows will also participate, providing descriptions of their experiences and working with pre-conference participants to start to create their own Lifelong Access Work Plans. Come learn how the Boomer Generation is reshaping approaches to aging and older adults in America and how to position your library at the forefront of this change. Become a leader by adopting the Lifelong Access service framework and transforming your programs and services to respond to the surge of baby boomers heading your way. The pre-conference will address the challenges and opportunities for serving mid-life adults who are examining options for continued work or service, planning or starting retirement, providing care to older adults or grandchildren, or seeking intellectual, artistic and social stimulation. The program will emphasize the importance of collaborating with others engaged in complementary work. It will help you assess your assets, identify your target audiences and reach out to potential allies in the community. It will also address strategies for librarians to help connect experienced adults with other generations or with those in the community who can benefit from their skills.
