Western Branch Library

Reception at the Louisville Free Public Library Western Branch Library
Friday, October 3, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

The Western Branch, the first public library in the United States to be dedicated solely to the service of African Americans, began in 1905 and moved into its present Carnegie building location in 1908. The Reverend Thomas Fountain Blue, a native Virginian educated at Virginia Union University, was the first branch librarian. The first African American to head a public library, he produced a first-rate facility which the community and library board recognized as a huge success. Western still is an African American archive and resource center and offers many other services to the public. The branch has computers, Internet access and computer classes and there are a variety of children's programs, such as story time; as well as adult programming.
